‘This is fake news’ – Fadzayi Mahere discredits online newspaper

paper, the party’s Secretary for constitutional Affairs Kucaca Phulu will take over the province’s chairmanship from  James Sithole, who was recently handed a vote of no confidence.

MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere has rubbished a report by the privately owned New Zimbabwe online paper which claimed that the opposition party is set to dissolve its provincial executive for Bulawayo and replace them with a four-member interim committee.

According to the publication, the Nelson Chamisa-led pary set up a Commission of Inquiry last month to probe infighting rocking the party’s Bulawayo structures.

The report claimed the Commission of Inquiry, led by Chamisa’s deputy Lynette Karenyi, recommended that the party’s provincial executive should be dissolved and replaced by a four-member interim committee.

In a terse response when asked about the matter on Thursday, Mahere rubbished the report. “This is fake news,” she said.

Mahere would no comment further.

According to the New Zimbabwe newspaper, the party’s Secretary for constitutional Affairs Kucaca Phulu will take over the province’s chairmanship from  James Sithole, who was recently handed a vote of no confidence.

Other members of the committee include pastor Obert Manduna, Bulawayo Central Member of Parliament Nicola Watson and former Proportional representative Member of Parliament Dorcas Sibanda.

The MDC Alliance has had recurrent factional fights in Bulawayo, with the effect that the party lost a ward Council election to Zanu-PF in Cowdray Park, something that had never happened in 20 years. Observers and party insiders blamed the loss to factional battles and the fielding of multiple candidates.

Following the 2019 elections, 12 losing provincial executive aspirants including provincial chairman aspirant and Nketa legislator Phelela Masuku wrote a letter of appeal to the party’s national executive calling for the nullification of the provincial congress results citing rigging among other irregularities.
