HUNDREDS of people in a luxury hotel in Beijing, China were quarantined after two members of group traveling with Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga tested positive.
The Wall Street Journal, which broke the story, published photos showing health workers crowded outside Beijing’s Legendale Hotel, from which hundreds of people were removed and quarantined after a member of a Zimbabwean delegation staying there tested positive for Covid-19.
The American publication says the case has raised questions in China, a close ally of Zimbabwe, about whether authorities kept information about the infection from the public.
Wall Street Journal says the infection hasn’t been listed on the country’s national list of coronavirus cases, suggesting that Zimbabwe was getting preferential treatment from the authorities in Beijing.
Two members among Chiwenga’s unnumbered delegation tested positive for Covid-19.
Zimbabwe and China enjoy cordial relations. The purpose of Chiwenga’s visit to China was not available at the time of publishing.
The former military boss has previously been to China on medical grounds as well as Government business.
