POPULAR social media personality and comedienne Madam Boss has apologized to her followers and corporate sponsors following some controversial remarks she made yesterday about the Johanne Marange Church-linked child marriages.
The social media influencer, real name Tyra Chikocho-Munetsiwa, made the unfortunate remarks during a Facebook live stream video when she was responding to comments and questions from her followers.
What triggered the drama was a follower of Madam Boss who requested that she join the protest against child marriages against members of the apostolic sect following the death of 14-year-old Memory Machaya.
Memory died while giving birth at a church shrine on July 15. She was allegedly denied medical help and her death was concealed from the authorities. Memory had also forced out of school while doing Form One to get married to Evans Momberume, a full-grown man.
Following the request to join the protest, Madam Boss responded saying: “Fambai mega kuyenda kwa Maranga ikoko. Mozotiudza kuti zvaita seyi. Tinozongo poster tichiti ah job well done. Handiti. (Loosely translates to: “Do it yourselves and when you are done we will congratulate you, post you and thank you for the good job but we aren’t going anywhere.”)
Madam Boss’s comments triggered an uproad with many social media users accusing her of being callous and insensitive to the issue of child marriages plaguing the Marange sect.
This led the hugely followed comedienne to issue an apology Saturday afternoon in which she said the Marange shrine issue is “one that has touched my heart”.
Said Madam Boss: “I’m a very peaceful person who mostly like to keep to myself and stick to what I know best, entertaining my fans even those that mock me.
“I’ve been accused of many things and called different names but I have never cared because I know myself. I’m a mother and also a women and my heart bleeds each time I see a women or a girl child suffer. That’s why I always post any issues concerning abuse of a girl child.”
She however said her comments were taken out of context.
“I chose not keep quiet on this occasion because the Marange shrine issue is one that has touched my heart and I’m pained that my live video a few days ago was taken out of context.
“However, I’m here today apologizing to each and everyone that was offended by that video and also to say I’m personally against child marriages and strongly hope the culprits of the Marange shrine be brought to book.” □
