AN Anglican Church priest based in Ghana has sparked controversy after a video of him forcibly kissing three female students during church service went viral.
The bizarre incident happened at St Monica’s College of Education in Ghana, and the priest involved has been relieved of his duties.
The college principal told Ghana media that the incident took place during Mass on Sunday, August 15, 2021. He, however, added that affected students are being supported by the school’s counselling unit.
This formed part of the conclusions at a crunch meeting convened by school authorities in Asante Mampong over a kissing incident that went viral on Monday.
In the amateur footage, the priest, Father Balthazar Obeng, is seen kissing three female students before a cheering congregation.
However, the third lady seemed unwilling but eventually gave in to the deed. They all line up and one by one they pull down their face masks before he kisses them on the lips while the congregants scream with excitement.
Tuesday’s decision to fire the priest comes amid calls from the public and civil society organisations for the Chaplain’s head.
The Anglican Church of Ghana has already expressed its dissatisfaction about the matter and has initiated internal investigations.
An August 17 statement indicated that “the said Priest will be dealt with in accordance with the norms and values of the Anglican Communion where morality is extremely revered in the Church.”
An education think tank, Africa Education Watch, has demanded that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) investigates the matter and apply sanctions where necessary. – via News Agencies □
