THE opposition MDC-T has denied it harbours any plans to recall one of the party’s two Vice Presidents, Thokozani Khupe.
This comes after Khupe approached her lawyers following a meeting held at the party’s Morgan Tsvangirai House in Harare where she alleges a resolution was passed to recall her and others from Parliament.
In a letter addressed to MDC-T Secretary-General Paurina Mupariwa, Khupe wants her lawyers to be given access to the minutes of a meeting held on 26 November where the said resolution was made.
“In that meeting, there were certain words that were used by some members that were clearly of tribalistic nature,” Ncube Attorneys, representing Khupe, say in their letter to the MDC-T Secretary-General.
“Further, we have been advised that it is in that meeting where certain recommendations were made to recall, Doctor Khupe and others from Parliament and local authorities.
“We are advised that your goad office is in possession of such minutes and resolutions.
“We request that your good office share with our client, the minutes and the resolutions of the National Council of the 26th of November 2021 urgently so that we could be in a position to take full instructions.”
However, the party has dismissed ever plotting to recall Khupe in the said meeting or anywhere else. Responding to the developments, MDC-T acting chairman, Giles Mutseyekwa, says Khupe attended the said meeting and no such discussion ever arose.
“The last national council meeting we had, Khupe was in attendance and she was the first to even contribute as she was saying we should delay holding our congress,” said Mutseyekwa.
“She told us that the party needed more time to prepare for our congress but we felt that we have to do it as a matter of urgency. So, it will be interesting to see the letter in which she alleges these things.”
On its Twitter handle on 26 November, the MDC-T shared photos of the day’s meeting which Khupe attended. In the photos, Khupe is seen seated cordially next to Mwonzora.
Khupe has had a frosty relationship with party leader Douglas Mwonzora since the later trounced her in an extraordinary congress last December.
However, the two connived and recalled dozens of MDC Alliance MPs and Councillors countrywide, angering supporters of the party led by Nelson Chamisa.
