THE death toll from last night’s accident in Mutare has risen to five after two people succumbed to injuries at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.
The accident occurred 20km outside Mutare along the Harare highway when a Beta bus collided head on with a fuel tanker that then burst into flames.
Remains of three people were recovered at the accident scene last night, and Seenza said they belonged to one passenger, who was on the bus and two people who were in the fuel tanker. These two include the tanker driver.
Having been burnt beyond recognition, the deceased will be identified through DNA tests.
Manicaland Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Edgars Seenza said initial investigations indicate that 57 passengers had managed to escape from the bus with injuries that included burns.
54 are hospitalised at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital and one (1) is admitted at Bonda Mission hospital in Mutasa.
