Road accidents kill 77 during festive season

ZIMBABWE recorded 1295 road traffic accidents during the festive season, and these accidents left 77 people dead while 307 were injured.

In an update on festive season accidents statistics for the period 15 December to 27 December 2021, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says 1 295 accidents were recorded, an increase from the 1 216 accidents recorded over the same period in 2020.

77 people died during this period, also an increase from the 66 killed over same period last year, indicating that Zimbabwe’s roads are becoming increasingly dangerous.

However, 307 people were injured over this period, a significant decrease from the 441 iniured over the same period last year.

ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said most of the accidents occured on the country’s highways and were a result of speeding, misjudgement, inattention and following the next vehicle too closely.

He reminded motorists that road safety isna collective responsibility and all motorists must follow road regulations and be cautious and alert all the time while on the road.
