THE UK is offering Visas for farm jobs to people from as far away as Africa to pick fruit and work in farms due to post-Brexit European shortage of farm labourers.
The jobs are full-time, permanent and the closing date for the application is 6 February 2022.
Among the advertised jobs available include drivers, fruit pickers, General Farm Workers, Vegetable Farm Workers, Meat Packers, Farm Labour Supervisor, Greenhouse Supervisor, Dairy Farm Worker and many more.
The UK growers are recruiting overseas pickers to fill a seasonal shortfall, and the window period for application is 6 February 2022.
UK media reports indicate that the number of fruit pickers being flown in from Africa and Asia has more than doubled this year due to a shortage of British and eastern European workers compounded by Brexit and the Covid pandemic.
Home Office figures reveal more than 16,000 labourers were shipped in from across 37 countries for the 2021 season after being recruited by horticultural farmers – including from as far away as Zimbabwe, Barbados, Nepal, Tajikistan, Kenya and the Philippines.
In comparison, just 7,000 workers from 14 countries arrived on seasonal workers’ visas in 2020, reports said.
The jump is due to an ongoing struggle to recruit enough fruit and veg pickers, farmers said, with some having to consider scaling back production as crops are left rot in fields.
One British farmer said local people simply “don’t want to work in fields”.
