Kombayi wins Gweru Mayor election, beating Chamisa’s ally by landslide

GWERU ward 1 councillor Hamutendi Kombayi of the MDC-T has been elected the city’s mayor after trouncing the other contender Martin Chikovo of the MDC Alliance by 11 votes to 4.

The election was held following the recall by MDC-T of Josiah Makombe who was the town’s Mayor since 2018.

In the elections held at Gweru Town House this Tuesday morning, Kombayi bounced back in dramatic style defeating hus rival by an unassailable 7 votes.

Speaking after his victory was confirmed, Kombayi urged fellow Councillors to unite and work to develop the city.

“I am urging unity amongst us councillors for the development of our city. What is core to our mission as councillors, is to bring development to our city,” he said.

Kombayi was the Gweru Mayor some years ago, but was removed in 2017 by then Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere for alleged criminal abuse of office.

He is the son of late popular Gweru businessman and politician, Patrick Kombayi.

Meanwhile, Gweru District Development Coordinator (DDC) Ndeya Nyede and Acting Town Clerk Vakai Chikwekwe presided over the election.

The voting went without incident.
