SENIOR officers in the ruling Zanu PF party in Matebeleland North province have thrown each other under the bus amid accusations that self-exiled former Zanu PF chief propagandist Professor Jonathan Moyo had infiltrated the structures.
Moyo, who fled the country in November 2017 when Robert Mugabe was toppled by the military, apparently has been in touch with some of the Zanu PF candidates and Tsholotsho North officials during the party’s internal provincial elections held in the last week of December.
This is contained on a leaked audio in which former MDC senator Believe Gaule accused the Tsholotsho Rural District chairman Esau Siwela of housing Professor Moyo when he ran as an independent candidate against Zanu PF in the 2008 general elections.
Gaule has been long-time buddies with Professor Moyo since the early 2000s when Jonathan Moyo joined Zanu PF. In 2004, it was Gaule as Tsholotsho North district chairman who allegedly invited Zanu PF party officials who included the now President Emmerson Mnangagwa as guest of honour at Dinyane High School for what became known as the Tsholotsho debacle in which President Mnangagwa sought to bump Joice Mujuru out of the Mugabe succession race.
When Jonathan was booted out by Mugabe, Gaule joined the MDC led by Welshman Ncube and even became the party’s Senator for Tsholotsho for some years.
In 2015, with Jonathan Moyo back in Zanu PF and directing matters in the G40 faction rejoined, Gaule re-joined Zanu-PF. Two years later, Moyo fled the country but Gaule remained and in December tried to contest for Zanu PF Matebeleland North chairmanship post.
He lost to Richard Moyo who retained the seat. Now, the current Tsholotsho North district chairman Siwela and former district chairman Gaule are on each other’s throats over the outcome of the recently held Zanu PF provincial elections.
Siwela allegedly refused to back Gaule for the Matebeleland North Provincial chairmanship race, which apparently infuriated Gaule.
Although Gaule is the one who has been close to Professor Moyo over the years, he is the one accusing Siwela of housing Moyo.
The leaked audio, which HourlyHits shares below, exposes how much influence and control former G40 gladiators like Moyo, Saviour Kasukuwere and others still have on Zanu PF grassroots structures.
Observers say some of the current Zanu PF leaders at district and even provincial levels rose at the benevolence or assistance of former G40 members, and the networks and friendships are still flourishing.
Observers add that this explains why Kasukuwere, Professor Moyo and others still have intelligence on the current happenings and power dynamics in the ruling party. On his party, Professor Moyo who is in Kenya often shares the latest developments in Zanu PF and Government, an indication that his sources are embedded in President Mnangagwa’s party and government.
