MDC Alliance Treasurer-General David Coltart has said MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora’s actions and “opportunism” will soon be exposed when by-elections are carried out in March.
Zimbabwe holds by-elections on March 26 by-elections to fill a total of 133 Local Government and parliamentary seats left vacant after the recall of MDC Alliance legislators and councillors. However, some of the seats fell vacant following deaths of the incumbent.
Coltart said it was gross opportunism that Mwonzora, who recalled dozens of elected officials saying they were MDC Alliance members, now claims he is the MDC Alliance president himself.
This emerged after Mwonzora wrote to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) claiming ownership of the MDC Alliance name and symbols.
“Mwonzora’s letter to the Zec is just shameless opportunism, written knowing he has Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zanu PF, ZEC and the courts on his side; but not the people,” Coltart said.
“He and his cabal will discover that the vision, people and policies behind a name are far more important than a name itself.”
To prove that the letter to Zec was not a fluke, Mwonzora went further and announced that his party would contest the by-elections under the MDC Alliance name.
He threatened anyone using the MDC acronym in the upcoming by-elections that they will have themselves to blame as the party will sue.
