Alstom Is Hiring: Semi Skilled Welder – Durban, South Africa

The purpose of the job is to Fabricate, fit, strip, repair and paint locomotive products using various Alstom processes to support the correction of Non Conformances.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Weld safety critical locomotive components as per welding procedure
  • Setup and operate weld, hand and power machine/tools
  • Read and interpret technical specifications, repair procedures, engineering drawing, layouts and relevant weld codes and standards
  • Exercise skills and have experience in boilermaker trade
  • Assemble, rework and disassemble parts to drawing
  • Ensure and comply with safety standards guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Ability to strip, rework and re-assemble material to relevant procedure/specification using the following methods – cutting/grinding/drilling/reaming/tapping and rust removal and paint repair

Qualification Requirement

  • Grade 12 / N3
  • Competency in GMAW (CO2)
  • Formal Certificate in Welding

Required Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience working on locomotive products
  • Competent in welding applications with proven track record
  • Working experience in GMAW (CO2) welding and procedures
  • Fitting and boilermaker experience will be an advantage
  • working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Proven track record of working with various hand tools and equipement required to perform this job.
  • Reading and intepreting drawings in a working environment

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering and technical drawings
  • Ability to work to close tolerances
  • Able to read and identify welding symbols on drawings
  • Able to butt weld and filet weld in different positions
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
