Armed robbers hit CAG bus, get away with over US$19 000 cash

PASSENGERS about a CAG bus were robbed near Chirundu this Tuesday evening by five armed robbers who had boarded the bus in Karoi posing as genuine passengers.

Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the incident took place at around 1830 hours at the 325 km peg along the Harare – Chirundu highway.

More than US$19 000 cash, R2 000 and other smaller somes in different currencies was lost as well as valuables to the armed robbers.

“The Police are investigating circumstances surrounding a robbery case which occurred on 14 December at about 1830 hours at the 325 km peg along Harare – Chirundu Road.

“Five unknown male suspects robbed a CAG bus crew and the passengers onboard, who were travelling to Chirundu, of their cash amounting to USD 19 050, R2 000, ZWL $690 and K1 137, and other valuables,” sais Nyathi in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the suspects who were armed with an unknown firearm had boarded the bus earlier on in Karoi pretending to be genuine passengers.

Police are appealing for information about the incident.

This becomes the second armed robbery incident aboard a bus in as many weeks. On 29 November, passengers travelling aboard an MBT bus from South Africa were robbed of cash by three armed robbers on the 186km peg along the Masvingo-Harare Road.

The 66 passengers lost R167 050 and $7367 after three men, who had disguised themselves as genuine travellers in the same bus, suddenly drew out pistols and started shooting at passengers before searching them one-by-one.
